Background of the Study

Poverty remains one of the most significant barriers to accessing quality healthcare services worldwide, particularly in low-income regions such as Kano State, Nigeria. Despite efforts by both governmental and non-governmental organizations to improve healthcare infrastructure and services, disparities in access persist, primarily due to financial constraints and socio-economic inequalities (World Bank, 2023). According to the National Bureau of Statistics (2024), Kano State has a high poverty rate, with a significant portion of the population living below the poverty line, which translates into limited access to essential healthcare services.

The link between poverty and healthcare accessibility is well-documented in global health literature. Poor households often struggle with direct medical costs such as consultation fees, medications, and hospital stays, as well as indirect costs, including transportation expenses and lost income due to illness (WHO, 2024). In Kano State, many residents depend on out-of-pocket expenditures for healthcare, making it challenging for the poor to afford quality services. As a result, many individuals resort to self-medication, traditional healers, or avoid seeking medical care altogether, exacerbating health disparities (UNDP, 2023).

Additionally, infrastructural deficiencies and an uneven distribution of healthcare facilities further widen the gap in access. Rural areas in Kano State have fewer hospitals and clinics compared to urban centers, making healthcare services physically inaccessible for impoverished individuals in remote locations. Furthermore, low health literacy and cultural beliefs influence healthcare-seeking behavior, with many opting for alternative remedies due to lack of trust in modern medical systems (Bello et al., 2024).

This study is crucial as it aims to investigate how poverty directly influences healthcare access in Kano State and identify possible policy interventions that could mitigate these challenges. By understanding the key barriers, stakeholders can implement effective policies to ensure equitable healthcare access for all socio-economic groups.

Statement of the Problem

Despite various health policies and interventions aimed at improving healthcare access in Nigeria, the impact of poverty on healthcare utilization remains a significant concern in Kano State. While wealthier individuals can afford medical services with relative ease, those living in poverty face multiple challenges, including financial constraints, lack of health insurance coverage, and inadequate healthcare infrastructure in their communities (Adewale & Yusuf, 2023). These barriers often result in delayed treatment, increased morbidity and mortality rates, and the persistence of preventable diseases.

The Nigerian healthcare system operates under a dual framework of public and private healthcare providers, yet the cost of private healthcare remains prohibitively high for the poor. Public healthcare facilities, though more affordable, often suffer from overcrowding, understaffing, and shortages of essential drugs, making them unreliable for many residents (Okafor et al., 2024). The inability of impoverished individuals to afford quality medical services contributes to poor health outcomes, which further perpetuate the cycle of poverty.

Given the increasing socio-economic disparities in Kano State, there is a need for empirical research that critically examines the specific ways in which poverty limits healthcare access and explores viable solutions. Without targeted interventions, vulnerable populations will continue to face significant barriers to achieving optimal health outcomes.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the extent to which poverty affects access to healthcare services in Kano State.

2. To examine the role of healthcare infrastructure and socio-economic factors in shaping healthcare accessibility.

3. To explore potential policy recommendations to improve healthcare accessibility for low-income populations in Kano State.

Research Questions

1. How does poverty influence access to healthcare services in Kano State?

2. What are the infrastructural and socio-economic challenges affecting healthcare accessibility for impoverished individuals?

3. What policy measures can be implemented to enhance healthcare access for low-income populations in Kano State?

Research Hypotheses

1. There is a significant relationship between poverty and limited access to healthcare services in Kano State.

2. Socio-economic and infrastructural challenges negatively impact healthcare accessibility for impoverished individuals.

3. Policy interventions aimed at reducing healthcare costs will improve access to medical services for low-income populations.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on the impact of poverty on healthcare access in Kano State, Nigeria. The research will examine both urban and rural areas to provide a comprehensive understanding of the issue. However, the study is limited by factors such as data availability, potential biases in self-reported health experiences, and constraints in reaching remote communities.
